From soldier to I.T. manager...maybe.?

So here's the deal...I'm an Iraq War vet (Army), actually still here on deployment and am at a crossroads in my professional life...on the one hand I am thinking about re-enlisting as a recruiter because of the changes to the culture (work hours, strategy, etc.). On the other hand, I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Communication (received prior to the Army) and have a couple of CompTIA certs in my bag (A+, Sec+). Plus, I have about 2 years experience with your usual help desk duties and a good amount of experience with networking and I.T. security issues (additionally, I handle the user accounts, troubleshooting, and communication flow for a unit of over 70 personnel with operations currently in 2 locations in Iraq, 1 location in Kuwait, and 1 location back at our home station in Alabama). I say all that to say, I'm thinking about getting out and applying for a federal job, perhaps a Department of the Army civilian. Now here comes the questions...Would I be an ideal candidate for a help desk management career (or any I.T. career for that matter) with the government? Hell, with private sector? I know the feds value CompTIA certs because they meet the DOD 8570 directives, and I know the feds value security clearances (I have one, by the way). Oh, forgot to mention I have about 2 years experience management. Anyway, what should I do? Any advice? My ETS is Jan. 5, 2013.

We work together and he is 5 years older (I'm 19). He stopped by my station like everyone does who I work with and sat down. He was training another guy because it was his first day. He started asking us both questions to get to know us better but then it became him just asking me questions. They weren't normal get to know you questions. They were are you a tomboy or a girlie girl, take out and a movie or classy restaurant, jeans or a dress, tattoos (which he has three) or piercings, high heels or flip flops. Then the guy he was training asked me jokingly boxers or briefs. The guy who was asking all the questions wanted an actual answer. I've been through the getting to know you questions before, but these were totally different and seemed a bit flirty. Does it mean anything or is it just some different questions he was asking??? I've never heard of a retirement move being paid for DoD civilians. If the Army, CG and AAFES do it, then I'll take your word for it. Unless you are at an OCONUS assignment where a PCS move was authorized, then you're going to have to pay for the move yourself. If you choose not to live in the location where you are retiring from, then that is your decision.

She is wasting her time, because even people in the house committee will realize that their are more important political venues. The U.S. has been giving billions of dollars to Afghanistan and those people are not even on our side, In fact the Afghanistan CIA just prosecuted members of their military for giving information to the U.S. to help us capture Bin Laden. Like I said, it is her feeble attempt to gain notoriety, but it's amazing how ignorant she thinks the public is. The military sponsoring in NASCAR is some of the best and most positive publicity for recruitment purposes, especially when the fans are watching the men and women of our armed forces attending and participating in NASCAR events. I am looking to apply for a Logistic Jobs overseas and was wondering if anyone had any information on a good company to work for. I am 10 year veteran with the Army with experience with logistics and 3 combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. Now that I am out of the army I want to go overseas as a civilian. Your timing was way off and I'm surprised the vet did the surgery while she was still nursing the pups. You'll need to consult your vet to see if they need to be bottle fed or if they are ready for puppy food. Is she still able to nurse? If the milk dries up the pups will stop.

Is the cost of the private security contractors covered by Dept of Defense?

I have been unable to discover who pays for the mercenaries we call private security contractors. Is it covered by DOD, USAID, State or who? If it not in the DOD budget, is it disclosed as part of the cost or are we burying this as well? If it is not in DOD, why are we paying so much for the military and then paying them on top of that? It is especially troublesome in that our tax dollars have payed for the training of these mercs while they were part of our military. Now they are, in essence, beyond the rule of law in most cases yet we pay them. Why do we have as many private mercs or in some cases more than we do military in Iraq and Afghanistan? Doesn't it bother anyone that these companies will sell their services to the highest bidder and are willing to go anywhere that profit can be made? And another issue is that while we are setting up programs to "win the hearts and minds" with the military these mercs are free to attack and kill at will with few repercussions. It defeats the whole purpose of embedding troops in villages to get cooperation. It furthers the image that we are the barbarians and create more hate and discontent. Any thoughts?

Is there something wrong with my two ten week old kittens?

I received two ten week old kittens from a lady last week who had given them flea, ear mite and deworm treatments. Last week they also went into the vet for their first distemper vaccinations and a check up. Everything was good on them. Starting today one of the kittens won't touch their food and rarely will drink the water maybe for sips here and there but rarely. It slept most the day but when its up it does play just had it had the last couple days. I'm wondering if this is normal for kittens. Also the food I'm feeding them is the same the lady used for them and he had been eating it just fine. The other kitten has a bout of diarhea it doesn't look like he is in pain and he eats fine drinks fine also plays good. The diarhea is not like liquidy it is like melted chocolate then after a lil inch long poop comes out as well. I guess I'm just wondering if this is all normal. I've had cats but never kittens. Let me hazard another guess and say that you're not a veteran AND that you have no particular skills that are in great demand, like say, a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation that included a supervised internship. Trust me, no one's wife, mother, or girlfriend gets hired for voc rehab counselor, or nurse, or rating VSR, or environmental biologist, or blood laboratory tech, or any of a myriad of jobs that require a specific degree or experience in order to qualify. I'm sure that there are some hiring officials who have no ethics and minimal management skills, but they are in the minority, and if people like you, who notice things that are wrong, would tell someone who cares (like the Merit Systems Protection Board) instead of yelling into the wind on Yahoo, then something would be done about it. Namely, that location would be thoroughly audited and investigated, and if the hiring process showed anomalies, that HR could lose their hiring authority to OPM, because there are loads of ethical, honest HR professionals who can't stand and won't tolerate that sort of behavior from anyone. After that they do there thing pulling ur teeth. If ur oxygen goes low they just crank up the oxygen on the machine because u will be on oxygen. U wont remember anything u wont wake up until they wake u up. When u wake up u will be extremely tired wondering what the hell happened. But its really not that bad. Trust me. You can ask the anesthesiologist all these questions hos job is to make u comfortable answering your questions as well as sedate you. Oh and when I had my teeth pulled and they sedated me I felt really jot and my chest got kind of tight and I felt like ants were biting me. I started to panic and they could see that they asked me what was wrong and I told them and they assured me it was ok and gave me some more meds and the symptoms went away. Strange girl in my classes talks to herself?

He is a DoD contractor and just got back from being overseas on Wednesday. He was gone almost 2 months but then got promoted and they brought him back to start his new job. Well Wednesday I was working all day. I didnt get home until about 11 at night and had to be to work 930 the next day. So I didnt see him beacuse there was no way I would have been able to get up for work. But I got off early Thursday and Friday and then would be off Sat,Sun, & Monday. I told him that I was sorry I couldnt see him that night (and said said that was ok) but I def wanted to see him the next day after work. He said that sounded great and that he got off at about 330 or 4 and worked the next 3 days. So Thursday I was so excited to get off and see him and when I finally got home at 6 I text him and told him to let me know when he was free. He didnt text or call me at all. So on Friday, maybe at about 7 I text him and told him that I wanted him to come over Sunday or Monday and spend the day with me. He text back immediately and said ok and that he just got his car back a few hours ago and is free sunday. Saturday night I text and asked what time I should expect him tomorrow...he didnt reply...sunday morning at about 1130 I called and no answer, then I text at 3 asking him if he was busy and to let me know when he was coming, if he was at all. He didnt respond to that nor have I heard from him ( I havent bothered contacting him anymore) im pretty pissed that he bailed both times and didnt even tell me, but idk if im overreacting or not. Im gonna give him til wed before I call him to tell him im done. When we first got together we told each other that we are tired of the games and wanted something real (he is divorced and has been cheated on by nearly every gf he has had) He asked me what my biggest fear in a relationship was and I told him being cheated on and he said that no worries there because he doesnt cheat. My Pelonis space heater shorted out and caused a fire. Do I have a case?

My Pelonis ceramic space heater caused a fire in my family room. I'm so glad we were home and awake! The heater was off but still plugged in. Honestly during the winter it's a permanent fixture in that room because it gets so cold. We do turn it off but typically do not unplug it. The other morning I heard what sounded like a cell phone vibrating, very loudly I might add. The next thing I new I heard my husband screaming "fire, fire, fire....He's your typical goof ball...so I figured he's goofing off with the kids...I turned around and looked into the family room and saw he was serious. There was a fire up the wall and behind the chair. He was able to get the fire out on his own however there was some damage. The plug on the heater shorted out (actually melted in the outlet). We did get an estimate for the damages and it's just over 8,000.00. We do have home owners insurance but I'm curious to know if it's worth the time and effort to try to have the manufacturer of the heater pay for the damages. It could have been a lot worse had we not been home and/or asleep but if this could be faulty manufacturing I don't think it's fair we are stuck with a large deductible.

On the other hand, I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Communication (received prior to the Army) and have a couple of CompTIA certs in my bag (A+, Sec+). Plus, I have about 2 years experience with your usual help desk duties and a good amount of experience with networking and I.T. security issues (additionally, I handle the user accounts, troubleshooting, and communication flow for a unit of over 70 personnel with operations currently in 2 locations in Iraq, 1 location in Kuwait, and 1 location back at our home station in Alabama). Now here comes the questions...Would I be an ideal candidate for a help desk management career (or any I.T. career for that matter) with the government? Hell, with private sector? I have been recently introduced to nudism and I LOVE IT and wished I had been introduced to it years back. I want to raise my 4 year old son and 2 year old daughter as nudists. Which Branch and What Job in the Military should I pick...?

I want to be a firefighter in civilian life probably in California after i serve in the military. After reading many forums and talking to recruiters, the USAF is next-to impossible to get a guarenteed job as a firefighter and the US Army is the same way and to my research both get next-to-no action of fires they have to put out. Also in California the certificates you get in the DoD arent recognized (at least in CA) for fire departments in the city. So... my question is what is great job path in the military where I can serve my country learn discipline, expand my knowledge and pick up some sort of degree like a associates in fire science and maybe get training of some sort that pertains to firefighting(not necessarily firefighting itself). i dont know if medic would be a good choice in the Army or if Infantry would be a waste of time. If moisture got into it, it may have seized and needs to be thrown out. Once this happens it cannot be re-melted. However, you may just have it at too high of a temperature. Chocolate melts best at a LOW heat setting. Take the chocolate off the heat and try heating it on low again once it has cooled. Do not put it in the refrigerator, this will cause it to condensate and thus - seize due to moisture. Let it cool to room temperature and try on low heat. If this doesn't work, you may need to start over with chocolate that you haven't heated or added anything to yet.

Is CTN a good job....?

So this morning my recruiter (Navy) wanted me to come down to the officer and talk with him because his friend who works at MEPS pretty much gave him a rundown on what I have available (due to my ASVAB scores). Right now I have the IT rating but I have an option to switch into either the CTN, CTT, CTR or IS ratings. My recruiter said I am EXTREMELY lucky because all of these jobs are incredibly hard to get. I am just wondering which one would be best for me. After the Navy I want to work for the NSA, CIA, DOD (civilian), NRO, or one of the other three lettered Intel agencies doing work with satellite networking and dealing with intel coming in from satellites and making sure that it is coming in properly. I know it sounds like a boring job but its what I want to do. What rating would be best, my recruiter said that CTN's are like the spooks of the Navy. The way he described it was that CTN sailors were the ones who analyzed enemy intel by accessing their networks and made sure that our national cyber defense networks are secure. He said that they are the ones we dont see or hear but they do some of the most important jobs (he literally said "they are the SEALs of the Cryptologic community). The one thing that stood out though was that he said that they hardly go on ships and when they do its only for a few weeks then they are off. One of the reasons I chose the Navy over the Air Force was the opportunity to see the sea (I have a fascination with the ocean). I know that when a recruiter is trying to fill a slot in a certain rating he or she needs filled, they would be willing to say whatever it takes to get their potential recruit to sign the paper. Thats why I came here, I want to know if I should stick with IT, Go ahead with switching to CTN or get him to switch me to CTT or CTR? At one time, you could enlist with a "unit of choice" or "location of choice" option. I think that is gone now. But we don't put Airborne in a contract just so someone can get Airborne Wings, we put that in the contract with the full intent of assigning that Soldier to an Airborne unit. It is the very rare exception that a new Soldier goes to Airborne School and goes on to a leg unit. Enlist with an Airborne option and trust to the Airborne gods that you will get assigned to Bragg or Italy. Or go with a Ranger Option and know that if you complete all training you will be assigned to the Ranger Regiment. Good luck!

Go the ROTC route. Officers side of the house pays sooooo much better. I started enlisted then switched over. It's a little more paperwork but if you have good NCOs your job is pretty easy most of the time. I'm female so Special Forces was never an option to me. My Headache Wont Go Away!!?

You should ask a doctor if it is a cluster headache? I have had similar symptoms and ended up needing antibiotics for a cluster headache and shots that relaxed my muscles. If the doc did the tests any other cardiologist would do...you have no case. The tests may well have all been negative. That is just how it works sometimes. Get a different cardiologist and sign a records release to have all your tests, etc sent to the new doc. He/she will know if everything reasonable was done. Unless there was gross negligence you are better off just thanking God you are alive. Imagine what the stress could do to you now... doctors rarely testify against one another

Question about life after the military?

Specifically, I've got a question about how certain veterans should fill out their resume. So, yes I spent five years in the Marine Corps and got out with an honorable discharge because Jacksonville, NC sux and I am saying that as someone who is from the Asheville, NC area in western NC. Anyway, so when I got out I tried to get on with a defense contractor and was politely told that I wasn't qualified due to the fact that I do not already possess a college education/four year degree. So I am currently almost finished with my four year degree and should graduate next year. To get to the point, I do not want to put United States Marine Corps on my resume. With that said, I was wondering if I could legally/instead put United States Department of Defense as my employer since the Marine Corps is in fact a component of the DoD? I have read SEVERAL news articles that state that the average veteran unemployment rate for my age bracket is roughly 34%. Also, the first thing that alot of civilian employers think of when someone puts United States Army or United States Marine Corps on their resume is a violent/non-stable bullet sponge or trigger puller. This is exactly what I am trying to avoid when I graduate from college. Not to be disrespectful or anything, but I kind of regret ever going into the Marine Corps as it seems like this hasn't been worth the trouble with respect to this so called "transitioning to civilian life" or lack thereof in my case.

Excruciating toothache. Relief?

Already been to doctor. Was referred to oral surgeon who can't see me for two more weeks. Need four teeth extracted. One is abscessed and has had me in EXTEME pain for almost two days. I don't know about hot water.... but basically when I was younger I also couldn't take pills easily... the doctor told me to take two table spoons and crush the paracetamol between them in to a powder.... add cold water in the spoon..... You are trying to be strong and pretend that it's not upsetting to you that she is leaving but your older sister (a protective figure) calls you out and tells you that she can tell you're really upset and that it's "killing you inside" that you won't be able to be with her. How can I keep my commitment?

I've been trying to lose some weight, eat healthier, and work out every other day. A few months ago, I was doing this perfectly. I was eating right, I was working out almost every day, and the fat started to melt off my body. I was happy about this but I only did this for about a month then one day I started over eating then eventually stopped working out. I'm almost back to the weight I was before I started working out and everyday I struggle on just getting myself to eat right! What do I do? First you must have a final secret SSBI and the supporting unclassified message for Marines it's announced as ALMAR message and put in the training jacket or filed in S1 office. A final secret is required for all NATO secret so if you have no access to them type of documents or any comsec stuff you do not have a final secret clearance. Prior clearances stay with you, but only active when you have a need to know and proper forms or investigation done after 5 or 10 years after your discharged.

Can a bad pool pump affect roof solar heating of the pool?

Our pool has not heated up like it used to with our roof mounted solar. Our pool pump rattles as well, it ran hot before with no water going through it for some reason...so hot it melted the basket by the pump. I just don't know what else to look at to be the problem. Thank you!!

Why can't I lose weight when I've been busting my butt?!?!?

I'm a 36 yr old female, 5'3, 169lbs. I have been eating low carbs (my carbs come from fruit, vegetables, and some low carb pitas) and doing zumba 6 days a week for almost 7 weeks now. I've lost 11lbs, but for some strange reason NO inches. About 5 yrs ago I did low carb (Atkins) and lost 50lbs in 3 months without any exercise at all! Over the years I was always able to fall back into low carb to lose winter weight. I'm becoming very frustrated and discouraged. I have not had more than 20-30 carbs in one day, and probably eat about 1200-1500 calories. I drink about 70 ounces of water, I don't consume any caffeine at all, and I take fish oil, and vitamin B complex. Is there anyone out there that could have a suggestion for me? I know your only supposed to lose 2lbs a week, but like I said, I've been doing this on and off for 5 yrs and usually atleast lose 20lbs in the first 3 weeks. I know I'm getting older, but the Zumba kicks my a$$, so you'd think the fat would be melting away! Any one with advice would be great! Thanks so much :)

The worst incident that happened was when I feel asleep, I felt half asleep and I could see my surrounding, WEIRD, anyways I saw something and I could feel a presence coming towards me fast as hell. What do i ask for in an EEOC mediation?

I was an employee for a huge international company for two year when i was DX with breast cancer. I had been promoted four times and was in the top 2% of my company nation wide when I closed the year. I have never been in trouble and I won over 15 awards for performance. The company requires a mandatory 50 hours work week. I took FMLA for a bilateral mastectomy w/ reconstruction and the med cert said 4-6 months for treatment initially before anything was known. My boss tried to terminate me during FMLA and it took the company 3 weeks to respond to my initial issue. When an investigation was done they only talked to my boss and not the employees that heard things while I was on FMLA. They told my boss not to call me, but he did anyway the next day. When I called to report the fact that I received a call the HR rep told me to give him a break. This was for a guy that called me yelling the i am not guaranteed anything and i am not on FMLA. The benefits manger then told me he called and got in a fight with HR about the FMLA approval. The same day of his arguement with the HR dept he showed up at my store and had a meeting that all the employees perceived as a meeting sataing thery were better off w/o me. The HRD was requesting me to work it out and I knew that I had to try. I spoke to my boss and he denied everything even things the benefits manager told me happened. The thing is the benefits manager was put on the phone to me with the title of VP of HR? Well I spoke to my boss and told him it was all a little to much to be blown off just like that and that I was not able to justify it all but i would try to work together. I had to constantly justify my actions and if I missed work I would get a phone call at home requesting details. I requested an accomodation before i went to work and was told I do not need to do anything but send a dr release. The details of all of this were documented in over 50 emails to the corp office. I went back to work just after 12 weeks, and I was told by the HRD that if there was any suspicious behavior he would know my boss had a hx of wrong doing and resolve it quickly. The day I went back the HRD text me he was transferred and I had a new HRD that had all my information. I had 10 days of vacation I was told I could use when I got back immediately if I wanted, and they were well aware of the fact I had my third surgery 1 1/2 weeks after I returned. They allowed me to return to work just three days after my 3rd surgery w/o a note. i asked about an accomodation to my boss and he said I dod not have a disability because technically my cancer is gone. I turned down both chemo and tamoxifen until I could get an accomodation request approved. they state in the rule book they do accomodations, and my bos told me him and his supervisors were working on my behalf to get me an accomodation. I grew more and more depressed over eight weeks of constant scrutiny and questions from my boss. he belittled me telling me I need new dr. he asked if i wanted special favors. If an employee missed a day he told me they are following my example. I was told I had to wait to start DM training that I was approved for before I left until I proved myself again. Things got bad when my boss started making me stay home from work if I called having to go see the dr. all my pleas for help were ignored when I finally got ahold of the new HRD he told me not to call him again and he knows exactly who i am. I was having a lot of bone pain which is normal for a 39 year old after my surgery. I called my bossed supervisor a week be for I was placed on a "leave". My boss's supervisor said he knew nothing about my request and if he had anything to do with it i would be there a long time. I was devastated that my boss lied about them helping me. 5 days later I was paid a final paycheck and told I am on leave. a leave i did not request but prior when i spoke to my boss he asked me twice, "is this your resignation? is this your resignation? Then i asked if he wanted me to return to work and he said, "i am not going to answer that question". He even told the HR department he said that to me and they said I must of misinterpreted the meaning? I was working till 9-10 every night to make up for any late time and I am a single mom. I pushed for the accomodation request approval and they mad me place it in writing again with exactly the schedule i wanted. i said i do not know I may not miss at all it just depends and I gave them a starting point to review. I figured we would work it out together but the board with an owners rep answered just NO. and refused to place it in writing. i sent them an email asking for a response in writing and no response. I went to apply for unemployment and they approved saying i was dimissed because i did not qualify for any positions. I have lost everything i worked hard all my life to obtain. What do I ask for?
