Wary of recruiters, seek real-world advice from military members?

Go the ROTC route. Officers side of the house pays sooooo much better. I started enlisted then switched over. It's a little more paperwork but if you have good NCOs your job is pretty easy most of the time. I'm female so Special Forces was never an option to me. So, I wouldn't know how to answer that part of your question.
